Energy & Transport

The release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, contributes to climate change. This is already having an effect in the UK. We all need to reduce the amount of energy we use by carrying out any number of simple changes.

A few quick questions about the energy you use in your home...

I use to heat my home

This creates tonnes CO2

Using energy efficient light bulbs will save Kg CO2

Switching off the TV (not on standby) will save Kg CO2

Tuning the thermostat down by 1oC will save Kg CO2

Turning lights off when not needed could save Kg CO2

Using energy efficient appliances can save Kg CO2

Fitting cavity wall and loft insulation will save Kg CO2

Fitting double glazing will save Kg CO2

Installing a new condensing boiler will save Kg CO2

Fitting draught excluders will save Kg CO2

Taking these measures could save up to Kg CO2

...and about your transport

Driving Car (1) miles would use Kg CO2

Driving Car (2 - if applicable) miles would use Kg CO2

Walking by foot (Miles) would use Kg CO2

Riding a push bike (Miles)would use Kg CO2

Travelling Miles by bus would use Kg CO2

Travelling miles by train would use Kg CO2

Taking Short Haul flights (300 miles) would use Kg CO2

Taking Long Haul flights (3000 miles)would use Kg CO2

Total Kg CO2

Your Pledge Form

Change 2 light bulbs for energy efficient versions

Over one year, it would take 13 trees to absorb to 40kg of carbon dioxide you would have emitted into the air. Over the lifetime of the bulbs (up to 12 years) you will also save up to £160

Switch off the TV

Switching the TV off, instead of leaving it on standby will save 30kg of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the air - the same as that absorbed by 10 trees - every year - this would also save you up to £51 a year.

Reduce you car mileage

The average car commuter drives 19 miles a day. Cutting that by 10% would save 130kg of carbon dioxide over one year, the same as that absorbed by 43 trees.
