10% CHALLENGE WINNER RECYCLES, REUSES AND REPAIRS

Making radio waves: Sarah and son Toby try out their prizes, a wind up radio and torch.

There’s no such thing as a throwaway in actress Sarah Platt’s house. Plastic bags are washed and reused, outfits are put together from charity shops and Sarah and her husband Andrew are keen composters.

Sarah is the first winner in West Sussex County Council’s 10% Challenge draw, where the county’s residents who pledge to reduce energy and water use through the 10% Challenge website have the chance to win a variety of green goodies.

Sarah signed up through West Sussex Connections, the county’s quarterly newspaper. "I thought this is really important. I feel really strongly about it. And it was nice to find I was able to tick most of the things listed and say I was already doing them," she added.

Sarah, who lives in Hassocks, pledged to further reduce car and water use, and increase her recycling and composting.

"Sarah is a great example of someone who is committed to a green lifestyle and will inspire others with what she does," said Louise Goldsmith, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy. "The purpose of the 10% Challenge, as well as getting people to reduce their energy and water use, is to encourage an exchange of ideas about how people can make a difference."

Sarah, who has won a water-powered clock and a wind up radio and torch, has been a member of the Soil Association, which regulates organic food status, for more than 10 years, and she supports local farmers markets and farm shops.

"If you buy food that’s not just organic but local too, that is even better because of the food miles," she said. There is a weekly doorstep collection of their recyclables, excluding glass, which goes to the local recycling point.

Sarah and son Toby, aged six, cycle to his school whenever possible, and Andrew uses a fold up bicycle, which he takes on the train to London.
