The release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, contributes to climate change. This is already having an effect in the UK. We expect that we will have hotter, drier summers, and warmer, wetter winters. However, we will also have many more floods and droughts.

The UK is making good progress towards reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, but according to the Kyoto Protocol, we must make a 20% reduction by 2010. This is equivalent to about 20 millions tons per year.
