to reduce your waste

The solution to improving our management of rubbish is quite simple - it's the 3Rs:
Reduce - The amount of waste that goes to landfill.
Reuse - Anything that can be
Recycle - Much of your rubbish that cannot be reduced or reused can be recycled.

Reduce

  • Install a “Food Waste” digester or composter for all cooked and uncooked food scraps from your kitchen. And put a compost bin to compost as much of your garden rubbish as possible.
  • Stop unwanted mail by registering with the Mailing Preference Service or taking yourself off mailing lists..
  • Take notice of the products you buy that are over-packaged and think about ways in which you can either make another choice or let the company know you dislike the excess packaging!
  • Avoid buying disposable products such as single-use cameras, paper handkerchiefs and serviettes, razors, paper and plastic cups. Quality products often last longer.
  • If you have a baby, use good quality cotton washable nappies instead of disposables.
  • Run your appliances on mains electricity or rechargeable batteries.

Reuse

  • Prolong the life of a product by using it more than once or passing it on to someone who can.
  • Take reusable shopping bags or boxes to the supermarket.
  • Have goods repaired or serviced rather than replaced if it is economical and safe to do so.
  • Use scrap paper for shopping lists, telephone pads and notepads.
  • Donate unwanted items that can be reused to local charity shops or community group jumble sales.

Recycle

  • In West Sussex there are various methods of collecting recyclable materials. An A to Z of recyclable materials has been compiled on the West Sussex County Council website to show you a whole range of items which can be recycled and to give further information about how you can start to make a difference.
